A Dog Bowl, a Pool Key, and Cracker Jacks

by GlassAlmanac11 · 1mo

My stepson asked if we could swim. I said sure, because I had nothing else to offer.

The motel off the interstate had a pool that opened that day. I’d seen the sign for weeks.

I grabbed the dog’s water bowl by the door — figured we’d let him lap at the gate while we swam.

The water was cold. He was scared of the deep end so we just sat on the edge, feet in.

I bought Cracker Jacks from the vending machine. We split them, picking out the prize together.

He asked if we could do it again. I said next time the pool opens.

Sometimes the smallest yes is the one that holds the most.

The dog drank the water from the bowl. We stayed until the pool light clicked off.
