The night before the move, I went around the house turning off lights and checking closets.
Under the flowerpot by the back door, I found the spare key. I had almost forgotten it was there.
My brother had given it to me when he moved away. He said, 'Just in case.' We haven't spoken in five years.
I taped a note over the thermostat for the new owners: 'Set it at 68 and leave it. The furnace is old.'
Then I put the key in my pocket. I didn't leave it for them.
Now it sits on my nightstand. I don't know why I kept it.
Maybe I'm still waiting for him to come back and ask for it.
