My Second Chance's Chipped Mug

by VervainNotebook17 · 1mo

I've been a stepfather for twelve years. Still don't feel like I've earned my place at the table.

The chipped mug sits on the counter. It belonged to my wife's first husband. He died when the kids were small, and they won't let me throw it out.

Last month, a physical therapy student sublet our spare room. He's young, messy, drinks coffee from that mug every morning.

One morning he dropped it on the tile. A new chip appeared, right next to the old one. I braced for the kids to rage. Risked the mortgage expecting a storm.

Instead, my stepdaughter picked it up and laughed. 'Now it matches our family,' she said.

The plastic lawn chair on the porch is bent from ten summers. The tall building downtown is the old grain elevator. Nothing here is perfect.

I finally understood. It's not about the first husband. It's about keeping things that are broken and choosing to love them anyway. I'm still here. That's my second chance.
