Three Entries, All in January

by KnotCrumpet6 · 2mo

I bought the diary in 2019. Navy blue cover, cheap spine. I wrote in it three times—all in the first week of January—then it went into the junk drawer next to my old swim cap and a dead phone charger.

Three entries. Each one started with 'This year I'm going to—' followed by a different promise: swim more, write every morning, be braver.

I found it last week while looking for a screwdriver. My niece was in the driveway learning to drive, stalling the car twice, laughing each time she restarted.

I sat on the garage floor and read all three entries. They were small and hopeful and written by someone who kept trying to begin.

I didn't start writing in it again. But I did pull the swim cap out of the drawer, and the next morning I swam for the first time in six years.

The pool was cold and I was slow and it hurt. But sometimes three false starts are just the way you circle back to the thing you actually meant to do.
