Starting Over

Three Shots, a Free Trial, and a Phone Passed Around

by BirchPilgrim17 · 1mo

First day at a new barbershop in farm country. I brought my kit and a disposable camera with three shots left.

It was also the last day of my free trial for the scheduling app. I figured I'd test it one more day.

The shop was slow that afternoon. Then my phone rang — Mom calling from home, just to check in.

She asked how it was going. Then she said, 'Let me say hi to them.' So I passed the phone around the table.

Old Ray took it first. 'Hello, ma'am, your boy cuts a good line,' he said. Then Mrs. Higgins. Then the boss.

I used the last shot on the camera to capture Ray holding the phone, everyone laughing.

That night, I renewed the app subscription. And I bought another roll of film.

Starting over felt real because her voice traveled through that phone to all of them.
