The job offer came in on a Tuesday shift. A supervisor spot in the city with the tall building — the one I could see from my dispatch window.
More pay. Better hours. And I'd never have to take another call from someone's worst day.
I hit decline before my break was over. Gut feeling. No logic.
The next week was my brother Liam's wedding. I hadn't seen him in three years.
I wore his old army coat. One size too big. It hung on me like a memory.
At the reception, I stood by the bar. He spotted me from across the room.
He walked over. First thing he said: "That coat still swallows you."
I laughed. "It's yours, remember?"
He nodded. "Thanks for coming." And for the first time in three years, we just stood there, silent, together.
