Who Keeps the Date You Were Born Again?

by HoneyDiary10 · 1mo

February 19th. The day my brother's kidney saved my life. Eleven years ago, when I was eight. No one else remembers the date.

I'm a locksmith, youngest by eleven years, living out in the exurbs where everything is a thirty-minute drive. Tonight, a Tuesday, no calls. Snow coming.

I have this old karaoke songbook I stole from a bar years ago. One page is dog-eared — "Lean on Me." That's what we played in the hospital waiting room, after the surgery.

My brother's at work across town. I leave him a voicemail I know he won't answer until tomorrow. Then I drive to the only bar open on a February weeknight.

The karaoke machine is dusty but working. I flip through the songbook. The same song. I put it in and sing alone to a half-empty room.

A woman at the bar claps. She tells me her sister donated a liver three years ago. We talk for an hour about the debt you can never repay.

I thought the door to that day had closed — locked forever, no key. But she held it open without even knowing. Sometimes the right key is just someone who's been through the same door.

I'm still the youngest. I still live far from everyone. But tonight, I'm not alone in what I carry.
